FAQ

  • What is a “palapa”?

A palapa is simply the Spanish word for a shaded, open area using palm leaves as a roof, similar to a “tiki hut.” The Aztecs and Mayans originally used this word to describe their houses. Palapas are popular in southern Mexico, Central America, and are well-known among most tropical countries around the world. They provide excellent shade and are a fresh retreat from intense heat.

  • What materials are used to make a palapa?

At North Texas Palapas, we use the finest materials - all natural cedar wood, authentic palm branches. and rope for a rustic finish. In addition to natural thatch, we also offer synthetic palms, which are more durable over the elements and can last 20+ years. The sturdy cedar frame in palapas is guaranteed to last 10 years, and the palm leaves are guaranteed to last 7-8 years before needing to be replaced.

  • how much does one cost?

The price for each type of palapa varies, depending on the customer’s different preferences and the size of the structure. To get a better idea, you may contact us at 940-594-8211 to schedule a free estimate. North Texas Palapas also offers payment plans to help with financing.

  • how many days does it take to make a palapa?

This will again depend on how big the job is. If it’s a relatively simple palapa, then usually one to three full days from start to finish. When a customer pays their first half as a down-payment, the materials will be ordered and usually take one to two weeks to come in. The cedar wood will have to be cut and prepared to specific measurements before being ready to construct on site. Another factor is how many jobs we have scheduled at that time.
